BRIDGES

May 3, 1927:   "The bridge on the river here is in a dangerous condition and may go out any time.  If it does we may be able to get one that isn't dangerous the year around.  Two years ago the center span fell in and the people here repaired it temporary.  But it seems we are out of Klamath county when it comes to roads, but very much needed to help with the taxes."   (The Klamath News)

August 14, 1928:   "Construction of a 'bent' bridge across Sprague river at the town of Sprague has been endorsed by the county court and bids for the project will be called within the near future, it was announced today by County Engineer Gene Henry.

The project will cost in the neighborhood of $6,000.  It will be entirely of frame structure.

Rapid development of the town of Sprague--caused by lumber activity and railroad construction--is the basis for the new project."   (The Evening Herald)

August 16, 1928:   "Bids for the construction of two bridges will be opened by the county court Saturday, Aug. 25, it was announced yesterday by E. B. Henry, county engineer.

The largest bridge to be constructed is to span Sprague River at the town of Sprague River.  It is to be 183 feet in length and will involve approximately 50,000 feet of lumber.  About three weeks ago a ten-ton truck crashed through the old bridge at that point."   (The Klamath News)

October 17, 1928:   "Visitors from Sprague River bring reports that the new $5,000 bridge which spans Sprague River at the highway entrance to the city, is practically completed."   (The Klamath News)

October 20, 1928:   "Construction work on both the Sprague river bridge and the Stukel bridge has been completed, according to information received at the county engineer's office yesterday.

The Sprague river bridge spans Sprague river at the town of Sprague River.  The work was done by T. B. Westfall, Klamath Falls contractor.  Pending the construction of the approaches the bridge is being used, and temporary approaches have been built."   (The Klamath News)

August 1, 1941:   "It is planned to re-deck the large bridge at Sprague River."   (The Klamath News)

March 29, 1950:   "Weather is hindering construction work on the Sprague River bridge and resurfacing of pavement between Chiloquin and Sprague River.

Work is underway on the bridge as weather permits, Perry Whitmore, resident engineer in charge of construction, said today.

No work has started yet on the approaches.  Present work consists of removing forms and finishing concrete work in the bridge.

'The old log bridge is still safe for ordinary traffic,' Whitmore said, 'Completion time of work on the new bridge has not been decided."   (Herald and News)

April 14, 1950:   "A crew of men is back at work on the new bridge over Sprague River north of town.  They have been busy the past week putting the Indian designs on the sides."   (Herald and News)

June 15, 1950:   "Highway construction is still in progress on the Sprague river road and bridge."   (Herald and News)
